Berk Durutürk is a PhD student in the Newell Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab at the University of Michigan. His research interests include the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, paleolimnological reconstruction, paleoclimate proxies, and isotope geochemistry. Before he joined Newell Lab, Berk focused on Late Pleistocene and Holocene paleoclimate records of lake sediments of Northwest Russia as a scholar at St. Petersburg State University. He received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Geological Engineering from Hacettepe University, Türkiye. His current research focuses on seasonal cyanobacterial bloom events in Lake Erie and Lake Superior and their impact on water column and lake sediment nutrient cycling and sedimentary records of cyanobacterial productivity over time.
