Analysis, Design and Application of Vacant Land Adaptation Strategies in the City of Detroit’s Gratiot/Seven Mile Neighborhood Framework Plan
Propose and map pragmatic and systematic alternative scenarios for activating vacant land and sparsely occupied areas in the G7 planning area, with consideration for natural area enhancement/restoration, eco-park demonstrating solar power/green infrastructure, re-envisioning the urban homestead, or other ideas that may emerge through community engagement.
-Analyze the hydrologic performance, as well as associated ecosystem services including cultural value and acceptance of the alternatives, and
-Design and illustrate its application through 2-3 alternative design concepts for a range of sparsely occupied areas and vacant property types.
Working with the G7 Project Manager and its designees, the team will research, develop, and design a range of conceptual land use types for implementation in selected study sites within the G7 planning area. The overall goal will be to improve the aesthetic quality of high vacancy areas while enhancing other ecosystem and city services and, especially, contributing to property values and neighborhood landscape quality in a way that builds upon social and cultural capital within the G7 area. This project will be informed by extensive community engagement, with multiple touchpoints to engage local people in a process to transform vacant land, property, and sparsely populated areas with uses that improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.
