Behavioral science technology saves over 2 billion gallons of water
Building on an extensive career focused on water management, Rob Steiner co-founded WaterSmart Software in November 2009 after identifying an opportunity to develop a unique combination of digital communications, data analytics, and cloud computing to improve global water management. After winning an inaugural Imagine H2O water technology prize, Steiner and WaterSmart co-founder Peter Yolles set about building the platform needed to realize their vision. Since securing its first utility customer in 2011, WaterSmart continues to forge a path of technological innovation in the water industry and is truly changing the way the world uses water.
Among its many features, WaterSmart technology transforms water meter data into easy-to-understand home water reports that are provided to homeowners via mail, the Web or mobile devices. Customers can compare their water use to others in their cities and receive alerts calling to their attention higher-than-usual levels of water consumption or notifications about potential leaks within their home. While WaterSmart technology has boosted water conservation efforts throughout the U.S., it has recently been an instrumental tool for cities throughout the state of California as they coped with ongoing serious drought conditions.
In addition, Steiner works as a senior investment advisor for the Summit Water Infrastructure Group (SWIG), an investment group that focuses on water and wastewater treatment and reuse. He also serves on the advisory board of Splash, a nonprofit that aims to get clean drinking water to children living in urban poverty. Splash works with foreign governments, organizations, and businesses in developing countries to bring existing water purifying technology to scale, providing more equitable access to clean drinking water. Rob was able to see the impact of the organization's work firsthand when he traveled to Nepal and Tibet to install water purifying systems in schools.
Says Steiner, "I am on a mission to use all resources as efficiently as possible and I attempt to do that in my personal and professional life. I believe we must first reduce our need to use our natural resources - then use them as efficiently as possible.” [embed]https://youtu.be/tRow5Z9jcqA[/embed]
